Today we’ll lift the red velvet curtains and enter the house of love, intimacy and committed relationships as we explore the unique physical, emotional and spiritual wildlands for Scorpio descendants. Our descendant is actually a very important part of our chart, so before we begin let’s first understand what the 7th house, also known as our descendant, actually is.
In both Esoteric Astrology and Shamanic Astrology, the rising sign represents the desire that brought us to life. We incarnated into a physical body because we had unfulfilled desires from past lives and these desires generate the birth and the driving force throughout our life.
While our ascendant describes the path we need to follow to fulfill our soul purpose and who we are learning to grow into and become, our descendant describes our significant other and our marriage or long-term committed partnerships. The 7th house is a kama house, kama means desire, and our ascendant is our physical body – so the path from our ascendant to our descendant is desire pulling our body towards itself, so that we can evolve and come into completion in this life.
We can only meet another as deeply as we’ve met ourselves, and the 7th house sitting opposite of us, is part of our shadow side or what we desire to come into more self realization and self knowledge. This is why we often hear how relationships serve us as mirrors, for us to reflect on and see what and whom we choose to be and are.
The 7th house is the path to our soul’s purpose or dharma – we can’t really escape this house, we need to move through it. After we have fallen in love and have made the decision for togetherness, we enter the 7th house. This is the traditional house of marriage or long-term commitment, and it is where we vow to establish something that is built upon trust, loyalty, stability, inter-connection, interdependence, and harmony within and without. This is why it also rules business and one on one serious partnerships solidified by law. Many people think the 8th house is sex, but it is actually the 7th house, as this is where we first merge and make a vow to someone or something, and the energies merge.
The 7th house is one of the most important houses in our natal chart, because our partner is an extension or expression of ourself – they are a mirror to us. As such, this is the house on our way towards fulfilling our soul’s purpose. We don’t have to be married legally, but when we start living with someone under the same roof, and are committed to them, it becomes a 7th house matter. For people who are monks for example, this house would be their relationship to God and the monastery – their commitment to it and their experience within it.
As a spiritual astrologist, I sometimes view this house as a sacrament – or the cross we choose to carry in this life; it is what we devote to, it is our devotional pathway through which divine grace enters us, so that we grow spiritually. We mature through our 7th house because we face ourselves, we face our mirror and integrate all parts of us that we hadn’t integrated before.
So even if you are not married, or don’t want to be married, the relationship would be the devotion you enter into. If you are a monk, it’d be your monastery; if you are a gardener, it’d be your garden; if you are an entrepreneur, this is how you approach the partnerships in your business. In any case, this is a house that asks us to practice self-awareness and dedication; it is a house that connects us to God and a higher calling, allowing us the opportunity for a deepening into more trust, faith and grace.
The 7th house is essentially the disappearance of the self, it refers to a need for selflessness, so that we can begin to learn harmony and balance within a relationship and what it takes for us to live together and thrive together; how we get along after the sun sets, behind closed doors, is what the descendant shows. This house is also where we bond physically through sex, and sexual pleasure and compatibility are also often indicated here.
The higher dharma and karmic lesson of the 7th house is to learn to love, to protect our family and the integrity and honour of our loved ones, to be accountable, trustworthy and responsible, and to take care of others; it is to learn selflessness, dedication, commitment and have weight to our words and integrity in our gestures.
Descendant in Scorpio
Our descendant sign and any planets there show how we may experience our relationships in this life; it shows what we may be seeking and desiring in a partner, what we may need to integrate within ourselves, and what our overall marriage or committed relationships and intimacy may feel like or what their themes may be. It also shows the kind of partners and their personalities and our relationship dynamics that we may share. The more we evolve into self awareness and make more conscious decisions, the higher the manifestation of these relationships will be and the more fulfilling we’ll be experiencing them.
If you have a Scorpio descendant that means you are a Taurus ascendant. Scorpio is a water sign, and Taurus is an earth sign – water nourishes earth, so we see a very fertile soil. Taurus is ruled by Venus and Scorpio is ruled by Mars traditionally, and Venus and Mars are the eternal lovers, so we see a very passionate relationship. Along with its fertility aspect, we see the depth of intimacy, romance, passion and desire.
Both Taurus and Scorpio are fixed signs, so we see a glue holding these two together. It may be harder for these ascendants to find someone they are actually in love with, but once they do they usually stick to it and don’t let go; and their partner too, having the Scorpionic underwaters of the descendant, tends to stick to them and doesn’t let go. There is endurance here in these relationships when they form, and they value privacy, loyalty and physical and emotional connection.
The esoteric ruler of Scorpio is Mars, and this is is the only sign whose esoteric ruler is Mars; Aries’ exoteric ruler is Mars but its esoteric ruler is Mercury. So when we have the influence of both exoteric and esoteric ruler Mars on Scorpio we see a lot of power and endurance, but a lot of stubbornness also. The dharma of Mars is to protect those he loves, be loyal, be trustworthy and provide for them.
Mars is a god – and he is both warrior and lover. He knows when to fight for honour and integrity and protection, and when to take his armour off and unveil his vulnerability and heart to his beloved. Mars isn’t a little immature boy who plays games out of his insecurity; at his higher manifestation he is a man of honour, he has integrity, he is a one woman man because all he ever seeks and desires is his Venus, and he is a man of his words. He has self discipline and knows how to harness his immense energy and power. Mars rules both steel and iron, so there is strength, endurance and reliability in him; his Venus can trust his direction and decisions and look to him for strength, support and protection.
Both Taurus and Scorpio usually have themes of control in their life, i.e. they can be quite controlling. They usually wear a lot on their shoulders and due to instabilities experienced in childhood they tighten up the reigns and never want to feel powerless again, so they want to feel safe and secure and want all under their control. They can sometimes hold a lot of pressure in their bodies also, because of all the responsibilities they hold too in their lives.
Subconsciously though, natives with this axis actually seek surrender – they seek to lose control and feel weightless in their bodies, release themselves from all they carry that burdens them and be consumed by love fully; and the only way they would ever release control is for love, deep love, with someone into whose arms they can completely fall into and let go, knowing in their bones that this person will never let them go and is strong enough, a match for them in strength, loyalty, passion and fidelity, to hold them. For this kind of person they will let go and lose themselves to find themselves, they will lose control and love doing it; love gives them wings, a weightlessness that rises them.
As Mars is the traditional ruler of this descendant you need to see its placement in your chart – the house and signs and aspects – as this will show you what kind of partner and relationship and marriage you may enter into. In general, having a Scorpio descendant shows you are drawn towards intensity, passion, loyalty is a turn on, “I am all yours” is a turn on. You are drawn to partners who are passionate in their life, and for whom you are their one and only, because you love this intensity; shallow conversations can be quite boring for you, you feel alive only when someone’s eyes are all on you and they’ve proven to you that you can rely on them through thick and thin.
You seek someone with whom you can feel their fires for you and their loyalty and devotion for you, and with whom you can share a devoted sacred love life – your shared private emotional cocoon. You love partners who exhibit magnetism, mystery, and quiet intensity; someone who will walk through fires for you, be fiercely loyal to you and whom you can trust with your life. Your partner in this life may be a bit more introverted, emotionally and physically connected to you, and spiritually deep also. There is a trust you’ll share, and privacy will be important in your relationship and marriage.
The purpose of relationships for Scorpio descendants
The purpose of relationships for Scorpio descendants is what’s known as mastering life force energy. In Shamanic astrology this relationship is known as the tantric path; and tantra means to give yourself completely in devotion to something, and through this devotion you dissolve and transform and touch the eternity within the present moment. You devote yourself to something so completely, so entirely, that you eventually go through inner alchemy and dissolve all your attachments to it. It’s essentially a path of learning to master life force energy, and to reach deep sacred union.
The Taurus-Scorpio relationship axis is about experiencing love that is deep on all levels – emotionally deep, soul deep and sexually deep. As both of these signs are connected to the senses, and all beyond the senses, it is all about surrendering oneself, and experience oneself, through trust, passion, intimacy and vulnerability; it is about complete merging of body and soul, as we allow ourselves, fearlessly, to be entirely stirred up by the wildish soul of another person.
On the one hand we have Taurus energy, which is all about experiencing the physical pleasure of life through the senses such as touching, smelling and tasting. And then we have Scorpio energy, which is all about experiencing the emotional depths of life and transforming themselves through the intensity of life force energy. When we combine these two, we have the deepest of desires for the ultimate soul-body-mind-heart merging. Both of these signs rely and depend on trust – so trust and privacy are the foundation of the relationship; and sexual compatibility and keeping the spark alive become a priority. And yet it isn’t merely about sex, it is about emotionally connecting to one another as deeply as possible; emotional connection is what will bind you.
People who haven’t yet integrated their shadow side and haven’t yet come into the higher manifestation may be misusing the sexual energy and fall into temptations without self control; where as natives who have come into the higher manifestation of this energy wouldn’t misuse the sexual energy, and wouldn’t even mind being celibate unless they were really in love with someone. People who are addicted to sex or have many sexual partners or relationships or think they need sex, are usually at the lower vibration of this energy and need to do more inner work on themselves otherwise they keep themselves trapped in karmic cycles.
This relationship axis is also known as the Tantric Path, because the energy of it is capable of experiencing the kind of love that would transform and transmute their entire being. It’s all or nothing. It’s everything. Sex is never just sex here – it is a way to feel one another deeper and reach the highest ecstasy, to reach God. They are here to learn about how to master life force energy, how to bring spirit into matter, and how to harness sexual energy to then channel it through their entire being.
These individuals would not be found on dating apps and shallow small-talk is boring to them. Casual sex-only relationships should also be avoided, even if they are tempting to them earlier in life. They would be able to align to their higher purpose only when they are intimate with someone that they love and are emotionally and spiritually bonded with. Usually in their younger years they’d prefer something more “stable” or “carefree” or even “open”; and yet they’d always attract intense partners and experience their relationships very intensely. This is because they are meant to transform through this and be aligned to their own passions and vulnerabilities; they need to surrender to love completely.
They need their souls and bodies to be in love. Their path to God is through experiencing a physical love connection, which is also emotional and spiritual. When you have this axis, you need that kind of sacred love – the kind that would take you into the deepest realms of intimacy – physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Touch, as well as physical, emotional and spiritual intimacy become very important in this life, and yet you can stay celibate for years if not in love. Not many people know this but Mars is a god of celibacy in ancient spiritual text, so actually a lot of people with this descendant are attracted to leading a life of brahmacharya or dharmic celibacy, or spiritual work and mysticism, or pouring their passion and devotion and complete focus and energy towards creative arts, such as musicians, writers, dancers. Through the path of devotion, in whatever area they are passionate about, they actually find themselves and their unique path to God.
But if you are in a marriage or relationship, and your intimate life is not going well, you need to address this, otherwise you may separate or distance yourself from your partner even further in more unconscious ways. You can try couples therapy or introduce some eroticism and imagination to your intimacy, to rekindle the spark. And remember: it is all about emotions, so emotional connection is key, which will then inevitably spark the physical desire also.
You need to acknowledge these deep desires that you have within you, and not be ashamed of your powerful urges, because it is your soul’s intent to be passionate and experience itself through the surrender to deep love. You would not be satisfied with someone who isn’t your everything; you need intimacy on all levels. You need this to feel alive and you need to learn to surrender in the changing waves of love and your own emotions. Your path to enlightenment is through learning how to feel all feelings, pleasures and passions. You are here to experience love in its deepest way that most people can’t even dream of. And you will.
Choose a partner whom you trust and who is trustworthy, and also someone with whom you can truly feel intimate being yourself truly as you are; you need depth of emotional and spiritual connection, and you need to be mindful that Scorpio energy can sometimes become ice when it hardens its heart and acts from its lower manifestation. Don’t fall into power and control dynamics, rise yourself to a level to which this energy becomes depth of emotion and fidelity and freedom rather than something that binds you into unhealthy dynamics. There is nothing sexy about being miserable, controlled and manipulated by someone.
To enter the 7th house we first need to walk through the 6th house – which is the house of self discipline, devotion, responsibility, accountability and humility. We need these skills properly learned and practiced in order to experience a better entering and living within our 7th house.
And after the 7th, we enter the 8th, which is where we see the fruitions of our entanglements and the new karma we’ve built in our merging. This is why all esoteric books will emphasize to you how important it is to choose wisely whom you enter into physical intimacy with, because you merge your energies and your dharmic paths and karmas also. It doesn’t matter what your descendant is, be mindful of whom you choose as a partner – because it’s not just a partner you are choosing, you are essentially choosing the kind of life you will live.
