“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under Heaven.” ~ Ecclesiastes 3, 1-8

As a spiritual astrologer, I use a blend of techniques from various astrology systems, and Shamanic astrology sits at the core of my practice for its wisdom and connection to all. It values the interconnection of all – the marriage between soil, weather and human hands, between the stars and free will, all of which align deeply to my own spiritual nature, practice and life.

Shamanic astrology operates through an archetypal and mystical framework, which is anchored in the universal truth “as above, so below”. It is based upon the core belief that everything is interrelated, interconnected and everything has its purpose when seen through a higher hawk eye’s view. Its insights are valuable because they provide us with a different perspective anchored in wisdom, allowing us to more deeply understand aspects and planetary positions rather than labeling them as good or bad. Essentially, all our natal chart shows is our inner relationships and aspects to ourselves.

Shamanic astrology is a connected approach to astrology with the intention of creating greater awareness to a person’s life purpose and their relationship to the great mystery or God. Often times, it serves as an esoteric or self awareness tool to validate and confirm what the person already knows or to strengthen their own senses and intuitive abilities. This allows and helps people in trusting their own inner knowing and inner process through a greater understanding of the mysteries that they have come to explore, develop and evolve.

The main purpose of Shamanic astrology is to give us the understanding of our own intention, purpose and the cycles of initiation throughout our life. This approach provides a vision of the possibilities we are here to experience and empowers us to make more conscious choices – because ultimately astrology is only a tool and we are the ones responsible for our own experience of this life. Our natal charts show potentials, but whether or not we step into these and their higher expression and manifestation is only up to us.

The Twelve Paths of Spirituality

In Shamanic astrology, each one of the signs carries spiritual wisdom and allows us an opportunity to come into its higher dharma expression, thereby contributing to our world and humanity in meaningful ways. We are all interconnected, and are here to support one another, raise each other, lift each other up. The humility of this understanding, that this world is one of interdependence and interconnection, is something to be held in respect, reverence and responsibility.

There are twelve paths of spirituality seen through the astrological signs and energies – each one signifying the unique way through the individual intention as it relates to dharma and ascension. Dharma may be seen as holding the lineage of our soul, as it continues from past life and karmic residues, and then using our free will making conscious choices, hopefully ones aligned to virtue, contributing to the evolution and growth of our soul’s consciousness.

In the context of Shamanic and Esoteric astrology, the dharmic path may be represented by the Ascendant path – it is the soul’s intended way of life. As we enter through the Ascendant through our birth and first breath and into our physical body, we then move through the Descendant or “the otherness” to reach our soul’s desire, which is why close relationships are mirrors reflecting to us what we need to bring into more awareness within us towards our soul evolution and growth.

The Feminine and Masculine Spiritual Paths

The twelve paths of spirituality and path of dharma are divided into the feminine pathway and the masculine pathway, or. involution and evolution, respectively. So before understanding each sign and individual path, let us first understand the involution and evolution spiritual ways.

There is a masculine path or expression and a feminine path or expression for all the signs. Each of these also has various levels, speeds, shapes, rhythms, many gradations and variations.

The masculine signs, which are the fire and air signs, fall into the evolution pathway; and the feminine signs, which are the water and earth signs, fall into the involution pathway.

The fire and air paths, which are the masculine expressions, are moving toward spirit, so they are invited to be more focused on their spiritual development and self awareness in this life. The purpose of the evolution path is to become more consciously aware and ascend.

The earth and water paths, which are the feminine expressions, are descending into the physical and emotional, so their purpose is to bring spirit into physical matter, i.e. infuse their consciousness or the God essence into whatever they make and create in this life.

On the path of fire and air are essentially the spiritual lessons of detachment from physical and material ego desires, and detach from the entrapment of the lower urges. This path is about transcending these and shifting your eyes towards God and developing spiritually. It is about spiritual growth, consciousness expansion and refinement of spirit, developing the virtues and being in service and selflessness. In this life they need to learn to separate the pure from the impure.

The water and earth paths of the feminine pathways are different: it is about bringing spirit into matter. They are meant to apply their spiritual wisdom into relationships and creating, stay connected to their spiritual core, and they are meant to experience themselves through the physical and material rather than live entirely in renunciation.

The fire and air paths are here to look at the maya as the grand illusion and free themselves from it, so it is only spiritual growth that may lead them to enlightenment as well as conscious detachment from the material, lower urges and ego entrapments.

On the other hand, the water and earth are more like tantric paths, in the sense that they are here to look at the maya not necessarily as an escape or detachment but rather, as a dance. They may already understand it is maya, depending on the individual’s self awareness level – but they are now here to look at this life we are living as the dance, and they reach enlightenment through learning to dance. Essentially, the water and earth paths are about full emersion, dancing and mastering the energy.

The Spiritual Paths of Each Sign

Our Ascendant is our path of life. It is the consciousness pathway through which we first enter this incarnation, and as we walk our path of life, body pulled towards desire (symbolized by our path from Ascendant towards our Descendant), we move towards our soul evolution.

Our natal Sun also shows an aspect of our life purpose, especially relating to the work we may do in this life as a contribution to humanity and where we’ll be shining our light of awareness as we develop spiritually. Our natal Sun is also the fuel of our life, and what pulls us forward through its solar rays towards our inner awakening and self realization.

As such, you may seek to understand to spiritual paths of both your Ascendant and Sun, as well as anything else uniquely relevant to your chart and life’s path. Please know that these are only general, and as all else in astrology, it depends on the rest of your aspects because everything is interconnected.

Aries, you are to walk a higher dharmic path of commitment with valour, integrity and responsibility. Leaving behind impulsivity, immaturity and attachments to duality, while committing and staying aligned to a noble cause, with patience and kindness of rhythm is what will support your spiritual growth.

Libra, you are meant to come into the harmony with the otherness – to discover and then highly value the pearl beyond the price. This spiritual path essentially means to treasure the true essence of a person and your personal relationships, and to seek the essence of all things, not just the visual or tangibly beautiful, but rather the true beauty through which love shines.

Scorpio, your dharma is all about energy and the capacity to feel it. You walk on the edge of aliveness, and need moving waters not stagnant ones. You’re a land of fire and ice; fire is a dance, ice is the prayer. Forgiveness is your spiritual lesson. Don’t be afraid to love, and love entirely. Allow yourself to feel deeply in yourself, and responsibly explore the right use of willpower and the right engagement with power. With power comes responsibility, so this is about building a strong spiritual core of ethics and responsibility, respecting others’ free will.

Capricorn, to walk your path of dharma you must align with the circle of grandmothers and the sacred feminine, and leave behind the history long and unhealthy expression of patriarchy, dogmatic and authoritative tendencies. You are here to build not out of ego or self interest, but rather for the benefit of communities and humanity, considering what the people really need.

The beautiful cover photograph is by photographer Martin Stranka; his official website is here. He is known for his dream like style, his deep love and connection to nature, and photography of rescued wild animals. What I loved about his photography when I first saw it many years ago was also the beautiful stories of the rescued animals he was photographing. For many years he’d meet people who saved wild animals, and was inspired by the devotion towards this cause, and the love and shelter and caring the rescuers were giving to the animals. You may read an interview with Martin Stranka here, where he shares about his work, inspiration and some of the stories about the animals.
