A while back I wrote about the Virtues of Simplicity, and today we’ll speak about another human hand held within the divine hand that holds us all: imperfection. I call it a blessing – because the spiritual blessing of imperfection is that it makes us human, and this is how we are then able to hold others’ hands in deeper compassion and to hold our own selves in greater authenticity.
In Navajo traditions only the Creator is said to be perfect, and as a sign of respect, as a sign of humbleness, is to be so-called imperfect; we are to accept this imperfection because it is the Creator that gave us the imperfection through his perfection for us – because to the Creator we are indeed perfect. To whom else does it matter to be “perfect”?
As human beings we are not meant to be symmetrical or filtered through social media filters, we are not meant to act as error-less and flawless; we have texture of skin, nuances of emotions, asymmetry in facial features which is what makes the most beautiful faces that inspire the greatest paintings that are then remembered across time and throughout history. If we were perfect, what would we ever learn and move towards to evolve and inspire to be?
In all creative workings, whether spiritual or otherwise, there will always be a tiny imperfection built in, whether we were aware of it or conscious of it or not; and no matter how hard we try and how many times we double check spellings there will always exist something not quite “perfect” because this shows our spiritual respect and our humility towards the divine hands that hold us. It is what allows us to also connect to others and have deeper compassion for them, because we see how all of us have our human moments; it is also what makes us more authentic in who we truly are as opposed to striving to some impossible standards that make us robotic.
In Jyotish astrology ancient scriptures it is said that no astrologer will ever predict anything with 100%, and that the highest will be 75% – because we are all as human beings meant to stay in the humility that we will never know it all, and the humility of this deserves to be treasured. No one person is to be robbed of their own realizations of their own along their unique paths; what good is it to know it all ahead of time? How will we ever build trust and all the virtues of we walked around knowing it all, as if we are holier than thou? Where would our humanness go, where would our compassion go? Such astrologers or psychics who think they can predict anything and everything are false and fly in ego.
No one has a “perfect chart” neither, and sometimes I’ve had clients come to me who feel so badly because someone has told them some aspects of theirs are bad or “flawed”, but there’s no such thing; if we zoom far enough we’d see how it all is there for a purpose and meaning, serving the higher path of the inviduals. No one is flawless, and we are not meant to be flawless, so don’t burden yourself with such things; perfectionism is not a healthy state of mind and being, it shows fear holds you and you need to release yourself from it, so that you give yourself the freedom your soul seeks to express itself creatively and grow and evolve spiritually.
It’s part of your path of consciousness that it desires to evolve and that’s while you are born – it’s a privilege to be born and a great gift; a great gift to have hands to hold, eyes to see such beauty, noses to smell, ears to listen, feet to walk and play, and lips with which to speak love and beauty and wonderful ideas and to laugh.
In spiritual teachings also you will never be told all the completeness; and the true teachings may only be given in parts to the initiates. Because spiritual knowledge will always protect itself, and because it is a path to be walked and for awareness to be awakened within the individual first; and even then, after as much awareness as we can hold as human beings, we will still not ever know it all. It keeps us humble in God.
In the New Testament when Jesus Christ says “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” in Matthew 5:48, the spiritual meaning of this isn’t to be flawless. What the meaning of this is merely an invitation for humanity to strive for spiritual perfection, and what perfection means in this case is spiritual growth and being devoted to becoming the best person we can be along our way.
The original Greek word for perfection which was stated in the New Testament meant “complete, whole or fully developed”. So it isn’t about being “perfect or flawless”, it is about spiritual growth and dedication, humility and trust in the divine paths, and walking a kindness and patience of rhythm with warm heart and open palms for our fellow humanity.
I often find that when I do readings for people who struggle with harsh self criticism or perfectionistic tendencies I make some tiny grammar mistakes; and I’ve always wondered why, until I realized these are meant specifically for them to understand it is okay to do so. We are not ai, we are not robots, at least not yet, and it is precisely in our human moments that we allow others to be their true selves also rather than wearing bags of stones of their shoulders filled with self criticism, doubt, low self esteem and hesitancy to move forward in life or show up in life because they are afraid of making a mistake.
From a higher perspective we are perfect in his eyes, and each of us carries our own unique nuance, a note, a song, that makes the whole puzzle more colourful and divine and beautiful. And like a puzzle piece, each is needed for each else, and each has a hand to extend to the other and then more beauty reveals itself, a greater painting is revealed.
Don’t strive to be flawless, strive to evolve each day and do the best you can with what you can. Inspire to be a better human being, keep your heart warm, your skin warm, your hands warm. And with such eyes, the eyes of the wise awakened heart, you will actually see the true perfection that is all around us and within us.
You will see the perfection of the rose petals, of the both even and uneven edges; you will see the perfection of the eyes of your loved ones because this is where God resides. God isn’t up there nor is he limited to a perfect looking structure or temple to be worshipped – God is in the eyes and in the temple of hearts of people. Sometimes eyes are teary, sometimes happy, sometimes angry, sometimes excited; like the face of a child it is sometimes angry or sad or joyful, do we only love it when it’s happy? All the faces are faces of God.
Like the ebbs of flows of life and waves, it is complete and perfect within its whole but it is precisely the movement of these waves that makes it the ocean.
The blessing of imperfection is that we have human hearts and we are alive, and yet within our hearts is the perfection of God, the divine breath that gave us life.
Imperfections allow us to have compassion for other people and their own mistakes and faults otherwise we’d be arrogant; imperfections allow us to be authentic and give rise to our true self rather than trying to be some robotic version of ourselves fitting man made standards; imperfections allow us to stay humble and keep evolving ourselves otherwise we’ll just remain stagnant and ignorant; imperfections allow us respect and gratitude to see how far we’ve actually come and grown, so that we see ourselves and others more clearly and come into deeper love and appreciation.
Imperfections allow us the freedom to move forward and try again, and keep walking, keep desiring to evolve and not limit ourselves in fear. Imperfections allow us learning forgiveness, grace, patience, devotion, compassion, and it is what makes us human and more humane. Imperfections, and our humility in that, opens our eyes to God, to love and to one another.
Love is the only perfection there is – to feel it, to learn it, to embody it; so do not stop yourself from loving and expressing love in any way you can regardless of whether or not you feel you have the perfect words or language or perfect gestures to. We evolve ourselves through love, it is what keeps it moving forward with its guiding light and longs us to be who we truly are meant to be. With the eyes of love we then begin to see the true perfection, the divine perfection and beauty that lives and moves and is within everything beyond what the human eyes see. So keep your heart, keep it warm.
