I still remember the moment and warm summer day when I took this photograph while in a beautiful butterfly garden on an island I visited. I’ve named her Grace, and she is part of my photograph collection that I offer in my Flower Shop. To have been able to capture her beauty is such a gift, and as I was preparing for my today’s spiritual astrology lecture on a natal moon in the seventh house, and moon as soma the sweet nectar of wisdom and illumination, I felt this would be the perfect beginning.
I have many clients who come to me with their natal moons in their 7th house, and also parents who seek readings for their children to help them in the best way for their unique needs; and when I open the charts of their children, many of them also have this placement.
This doesn’t really surprise me, because essentially, the moon in the seventh house seeks emotional nourishment, emotional stability, spiritual wisdom and illumination, and to feel truly seen and understood by another person. And this is what they feel from me: the empathic understanding and nourishment, the insight, and my ability to truly see them as they are and help them align on their dharmic paths.
Follow me today in the beautiful butterfly gardens as I share with you how this lunar placement may show along the path in a person’s life. Whether this touches your natal chart or not, may this be enriching to you and your deepening of understanding real astrology.
As always, please remember that these are very general, because astrology is relational. Nothing ever exists as an absolute or on its own; everything is interdependent and interconnected, and all aspects and placements can only be properly interpreted by what else is going on in the chart – all holds the hands of all else, and within each is itself and all else.

Moon, the Sweet Nectar
The way I’d like to start today is by understanding a more mystical side of the moon, as the sweet nectar of life called soma. This is what will open the doorways of understanding this placement more deeply.
Moon is soma. Soma refers to the sacred drink of the gods or the sweet divine nectar, also referred to as honey, ambrosia, or the waters of heaven; and it can also be called lunar elixir or moonflower.
In Vedic astrology our moon is referred to as Chandra, because Chandra is the god of the moon. In Sanskrit, chandra means shining. In yoga, moon is connected to sattva, which essentially allows you to live a more fulfilling life, if you choose to seek deeper and evolve, and reach beyond the boundaries of the limitations within you. To reach the nectar of the moon, you need to develop the sattvic qualities, such as appreciation, generosity, gratitude.
In ancient sacred text, it is said that on some special and very rare moon nights, when this kind of tiny drop of nectar falls from a plant or flower and touches the tongue or eyes of someone, that person will gain insight into spiritual knowledge and higher wisdom and mystical secrets. Suddenly you may see the infinite spiritual realms, see the beauty beyond the veil and the rich worlds of mysticism and mystical secrets. There, everything is possible; there, all creativity is possible. But such things, moments of catching the drop of nectar are rare.
Our natal moon shows many things, and I’ve spoken in depth about her before; she shows the lineage of our soul, the beliefs that shape our heaven we live in, our deepest most sacred inner part and what we need, how we love and we’re loved. Now with soma, we understand that she shows us where we may find the sweet nectar and expand spiritually, emotionally and creativity; and with the shining of chandra, she shows us the place illuminated – where we seek to be illuminated, and where we illuminate others also.
Wherever your natal moon is, and thereby where your source or opportunity for the sweet nectar is, invites you to walk the path of devotion, love and patience. It invites you to invest deeply into something and someone, and stay through the waxing and waning, ebbs and flows. It invites you to reflect on how you extract soma from others also, and how you seek it, and how you love and how you show your affection for others; how do you feed others, what do you give them, how do you nourish them.
We can only love what we appreciate. And if we hurry and seek instant gratification, we will miss the beauty, the love, the opportunity, the drop of nectar. Our pleasure grows only when we give of ourselves to another or a project we love, and we allow that love to grow us, expand us, dissolve our pre-conditioning and biases, and open us to see and taste the sweetness. If we only stay on the surface of things in life, we can’t reach the sattva, we can’t live a fulfilling life and experience deeper relationships and true love, and we certainly can’t touch nor ever taste soma neither.
To get that sweetness from the moon that it offers, such as the love, the higher vision, the immense creative potential, the fulfillment, the nectar, we need to walk the path of authenticity, self development, appreciation, devotion and seeking deeper wisdom. This means to let go of our entitlements, selfishness, ignorance, impatience, ingratitude, and the need for instant gratification.
Moon seeks of us sattva; and if we seek to live a life that goes beyond the surface, we need to be willing to go deeper, to open up to the wisdom and self knowledge that offers su an opportunity for a deepening, and perhaps even someday offers us a taste of the sweet nectar.
Moon in the 7th house
When your natal moon is in the 7th house, it is kind of like a butterfly seeking that soma nectar of wisdom and purpose in life, but it is hard to find. Essentially what these natives seek is emotional stability and nurturing from another person throughout their lives; so the path of dharma is recognizing that you yourself need to give that emotional stability and nurturing within first.
On a mundane level, if you have this placement you may be always seeking a soulmate, or always longing to find your soulmate, or longing to be in a deeply loving and emotionally connected relationship. And yet within relationships, things always wax and wane, like the moon.
Sometimes you may feel very happy and think this is the soulmate, and other times perhaps you feel disillusioned or detached or bored or like you are not fulfilled with the person. So it’s about learning to ride the waves and not really move into extremes, being a bit more flexible. If you have Pluto aspecting this, it’s about learning to let go of attachments or expectations, and let the other person some freedom to be themselves.
The higher soul lesson here is that what you see is not necessarily what it is, and that things always wax and wane, ebb and flow, but it is like a moonhold: the waning is held by the waxing, and just like the moon, the entirety is there, even if not seen in the sky with the reflected light of sun. Sometimes it’s just a new moon, so we don’t see her, but she is still there, in the bedchambers with her beloved sun in union.
The desire with this 7th house moon is to connect with other people, and illuminate them in some way, just as you seek to feel seen and illuminated in your own light and true self by other people. There is deep desire here to connect, teach, guide people, whether through travel, cooking, feeling like you are sharing something with others.
As the moon connects to the lineage of our soul and especially the maternal lineage, it may be literally like sharing an old recipe from your grandmother, or even creating spaces where people bond and feel nourished or nurtured or a space of belonging. Some people with this placement build or support temples or nursing homes or churches, i.e. places where others find some solace and nurturing and belonging. Being able to do this and feel like you are contributing in this way will give you emotional fulfillment and a feeling of serenity.
Falling in love will always be important in your life, as in a way, you are seeking to feel more intimacy with the world itself, and through that, understand your inner world. Themes of your life will revolve around relationships, movement and travel, and going through these waxings and wanings, and it is precisely these moon phases that deepen you in love.
So it’s about being with your person, moving with your person, like a cradle or hammock during a full moon night – this is what makes you feel serene, as it embodies the movement of moon while being in your togetherness through these movements. So if you live within someone in the future it may be nice to be by the water or have a hammock or swing on the terrace or balcony of your home i.e. have something that makes you feel this kind of movement and beauty.
It’s not good for you to isolate yourself, you need other people in your life, and you also need some spiritual practice or times you tune into yourself. Perhaps meditate or learn spiritual things, or deepen your faith in something, whether it is prayer, religion etc. It is essentially about strengthening your inner spiritual core and faith in the divine, so it is supportive of your path to perhaps seek spiritual guidance when you need it, such as astrology or have your spiritual mentor and guide that you trust.
Our seventh house is our shadow and what we seek in another to fill something within ourselves. With the moon here, you are seeking emotional stability and emotional nurturing, to be loved and to be seen; and it is because you may not have felt that way when you were a child by your own mother or parents or mother-like figure. From a psychological perspective, because there is deep psychology here, it shows you are looking for your mother in a partner and depending on what your experience was with her, this may play out differently.
So it is important to reflect on what you beliefs about love and relationships are; how do you love, how do you nurture others, how do you show your love and affection and appreciation for others. It’s also about being mindful of over-identifying yourself with others and their opinions, because a lot of times you may shift and change depending on who you are with, and not really living a life that is truly yours or authentic to you. A big part of bringing this into balance starts with building your own sense of self, and learning that love begins from within, and we can’t seek it from external ways.
We can only meet another as deeply as we’ve met ourselves. And we seek to love another truly, and be loved in turn, it is about really learning how to love and what true love really is. It’s about authenticity also, and being mindful not to always seek validation from others, nor placing your self worth in someone else’s hands.
If you are a parent whose child has his moon in the 7th house, you may find he has a more difficult time sleeping on his own when little. There is nothing to worry about – actually a lot of clients have this placement for their children when they come seek me for guidance, and are always worried why the child doesn’t sleep on its own yet, but it’s because the child needs a lot of nurturing and affection from you. Otherwise, it may grow up feeling a lack and seeking others to fulfill this emotional need for security and nurturing that it didn’t receive in the way it needed as a child.
It also shows that you yourself as the parent are learning how to be more in tune with your emotional self through the emotional needs of your child, and spending more time together, because this placement in a child’s chart can show its parents often had a lot of other people they tended to, whether because of work or because they were very busy or public figures.
Try to spend quality moments of a lot of cuddling and sharing, and as your child grows older, try to give him space for his unique self expression, so that co-dependence is avoided, though still be open to your child whenever it seeks to share something personal. Try not to judge or limit his self expression or choice of work or study or relationships in life, and just enjoy your moments together, finding time for quality bonding, perhaps walking around in nature or even travelling.
What the moon in the seventh house essentially is here to learn is to discern true love from false love. The way of evolution is through this understanding – the understanding of what love is, how it moves, how it feels, how it gives, how it tastes and speaks and sounds like. Soma reminds us here that we need to embody the higher virtues, to appreciate more deeply, to understand the movements of life and of love, as much as we understand our own movements and cycles.
Sometimes you may face situations or relationships which aren’t real love, where you may need to learn and face what co-dependence is, etc., but the purpose unfolding is that through seeing what love isn’t you will know what it is. And when true love touches you, it heals. Whether it touches you with compassion, words, encouragement, being seen, it heals and it raises you, it lifts you up, it gives you peace and serenity.
Love has many shapes and forms, various speeds and movements. It unfolds through patience, joy, compassion, tenderness, softeness of touch, laughter, creativity, wisdom, forgiveness, grace, trust, faith, surrender, intentional listening. There are many ways, many nuances.
In specific constellations or nakshatras or fixed stars alignments, this lunar placement can give talent for acting or creative pursuits, being able to move people through their emotional and creative expressions. If the talent is developed, it may give the native the ability to understand and speak the language of poetry, of art and music, of the non-linear things.
And if you can understand that love isn’t necessarily about another person, but that it is actually about embodying love and shaping it with our hands and words and deeds, then this placement can be quite illuminating – not just for you and your own experience of life, but also for others around you. This is when we get to taste soma, and deepen in the intimacy with the world in its entirety.
