One of the most important yet less known and discussed aspects of our natal Jupiter is that he is jeeva, or breath of life – he is the life force that connects soul to body. In our natal chart Jupiter often gives deep insights on our life path and soul purpose in this life, and where we may be expanding as well as contributing to others and being in service offering our wisdom, skills and devotion.
Because of this non-linearity that Jupiter essentially holds as jeeva, he connects to our past lives – and shows us where we’ve been, what our deeds may have been and what gifts we may have attained with us thereby now offering them to others also as part of our soul’s purpose and life path.
In esoteric astrology, Jupiter’s primary purpose is one of fusion – meaning that we are meant to blend and merge the various aspects and dualities of heart and mind to create greater love and wisdom. His position in our chart shows us where we’ve come from in past lives and where in this life there is our greatest tendency to towards fusion, and the possibility for the greatest achievement of our higher self.
As I mentioned, Jupiter relates to past lives also – because where we are is interconnected to where we’ve been; and the skills and gifts we have are a result of our past life deeds, just like in this life the more virtuous life we lead, the more ethical and kind and generous we are, and the more spiritual development we do, the more gifts we’ll have in the future also, as well as help our lineage and collective consciousness.
There are many gifts we may have – for example, people who are naturally generous is because they’ve been spiritually developed in past lives, as generosity is a spiritual gift showing an open heart and ability to love. Wisdom too is a spiritual gift, because the ability to be able to perceive higher knowledge and understand it is due to developing your higher mind and evolving on a soul level. So our gifts and talents aren’t just artistic or mathematical, they can be like virtues also, showing that the soul has developed spiritually.
When it comes to past life and karmic astrology we may often look at our South Node; the sign of it shows us how we’ve been in past lives as qualities of our personality or behaviours, while the house placement shows us where our most past lives have taken place such as the area of life we were most involved in or where we developed through the most.
Aspects in our natal chart are really insightful, and particularly squares are considered skipped karmic steps from past lives, which we need to work through and learn from in this life for our soul evolution, otherwise we may be stuck. Squares to the Nodes are especially karmic and important, so they will cause friction and tension until the native learns what their soul needs to. Conjunctions to the Nodes are especially important also, and 12th house planetary placements will show an emphasis for inner work and karmic balance.
We can also look at our natal Moon, as she shows the lineage of our soul and soul tribe, what we may have been doing and what we are most connected to which still offers us the most sacred and deepest part of ourselves for comfort and love in this life.
Saturn is also looked at as he is our master spiritual teacher and lord of karma, and where he is in our natal chart shows us where our important spiritual lessons and growth will come, as these are areas where we wanted to learn and evolve from but for some reason we didn’t manage to learn this lesson completely in past lives.
And then there’s Jupiter – who also shows us about our past lives. The way to understand it, and I’ll share with you a very simple technique, is to look at the house before it. This will show you what qualities you have taken on from previous incarnations, which will help you towards accomplishing this life’s soul purpose.
The house before your natal Jupiter shows the area of life you were quite involved in, and these are often things where you may feel as a major driving force or passion pushing you forward. Whether or not your past life deeds earned you good karma or not is usually seen in your daily life. Naturally, if you have an open heart it’s because you’ve been doing good; if you are a bit more selfish and have problems with establishing deeper connections with people, then perhaps that’s something to look into and try leading a life of more virtue, generosity and do inner work.
The quality of your past life deeds and dharma and karma can be seen through your Navamsa chart, or 9th divisional chart, which essentially dissects your natal 9th house of dharma and past life karma and rewards, to see the quality and fruition. I’ve spoken on this in depth before – the natal chart doesn’t show you necessarily whether a person is virtuous or not, and the Navamsa is what will give you deeper insights on this.
Let’s go through an example.
Natal Jupiter in 9th House
Suppose you have your natal Jupiter in your 9th house. This shows that in past lives there was much emphasis for you in your 8th house of gaining esoteric knowledge, astrology, mysticism, and you gathered a lot of spiritual knowledge and wisdom. But you didn’t really share it openly as the 8th house is more private in its nature – and yet you hold all of this wisdom, which now, in this life, you’ve incarnated to share with more people and perhaps even rise up in your role as a spiritual guide, teacher and publish books or articles also.
You may be more of a private person, and may not even ever want to be “out there” on things like social media, but with such a strong Jupiter, especially if supported by good aspects and strong Navamsa, the time period will come where your talents and gifts and skills and all knowledge you hold and have earned through your hard work for life times will need to be shown to others – and it will.
The 9th house is a dharma house of fortune, and especially if the Navamsa too supports it like for example having Jupiter on your Navamsa ascendant there and having harmonious natal aspects to your Jupiter, it shows you have earned good rewards from past life deeds and virtuous living. Our natal 9th house is our spiritual body – and we develop our spiritual body or etheric body through lives; the more virtuous lives we live, the more developed our spiritual body will be, and the more positive results we’ll experience in our physical body also. So when we see someone having a good natal 9th house, harmonious aspects and a good Navamsa, this shows us that we’ve been developing spiritually through our good deeds through many lives, and may hopefully continue to do so, and that these good deeds will be promising us good physical manifestation in this life as well.
Having the 8th house being 12th from your natal Jupiter shows that you have spent a lot of time in past lives focused on gaining secret knowledge and you developed a lot spiritually. You probably wrote books in your head, and yet you didn’t share that knowledge publicly – it was more esoteric, and even if you shared it with others, it was with few others, so you really took a deep dive into mysticism, intuitive development and esoteric knowledge. In this current life you may sometimes feel like you constantly have ideas or “books and writings” in your mind, like as if you are speaking to yourself, and this is because you hold a lot within you as knowledge and wisdom that you’ve worked in more privacy before.
You were quite comfortable with living a more hidden or secretive life, as it allowed you to gain knowledge and evolve spiritually; and now you come into this life with a lot of knowledge and wisdom. If you have good karma, this placement shows you probably don’t need many teachers or mentors and sometimes even as a child you just learned things very quickly and had many talents, and people may often seek you for guidance. This placement often shows that if you gained good karma you will now have an amazing perception, insight and be able to seek into the deeper meaning and perceive higher knowledge, which may be more difficult for others to grasp or absorb.
You probably still prefer living a more secretive life or just still prefer not to publicly share your esoteric wisdom and ideas – because you spent a lot of time in past lives not being public with your knowledge. As I mentioned, you may have written books in your mind, poetry in your mind, seen art and ideas and innovations in your mind, and yet didn’t put it out there for all to know – and so in this life, now, with your 9th house shining bright, you are here to share it.
You are now called to share your knowledge, ideas, perspectives and wisdom with others. You may still be hesitant but life will call you to share, as people will seek you and find you even when you are strategically hiding from them. So do your best to just put your work out there; you don’t need to be on social media if that’s not your values (and you probably have very clear values and ethics, which is fine and great!), but just maybe start a blog.
Eventually you will probably publish a book or have some platform in this life to step into your teaching and guidance role. And if you have a talent for poetry or literature, this could also be from past lives and you may finally publish the books you’ve had written in your soul all along.
The 9th house is a light house. It is like our skylight – the lantern and starry sky towards which we look to inspire, aspire and connect to the unity of which we all come from. It is the house of God in ancient astrology meaning that here we find what connects us, and through it, and through our actions, we contribute to other people’s unity both internally and externally. Here is a unity of different beliefs and religions, and inspiring people to learn from the differences and see the common threads uniting us all, rather than separating ourselves and being judgmental towards things or subjects which we are not used to. You are here to essentially rejuvenate or even rebirth knowledge in our world, and to shape it and translate it in a way that it may be more easily absorbed by people.
When it comes to relationships though, as you’ve spent quite a bit of time in your cave and lover’s cocoon of the 8th house, suddenly the light of the 9th house relationship wise may make you feel very exposed; and in fact, I would recommend that you keep your marriage and relationships and partners private. Don’t share your private life with others, and keep your relationships behind closed doors. There is a saying that a woman’s love world is an ocean of secrets, and this is what we see here – what you and your beloved share is only for the two of you, don’t share your private life with others, keep it lit in your home and hearts, and stay protective of your loved ones and their privacy also.
