A few years ago I shared with you as a mystic about the inner earth. It’s one of the foundations of my professional practice as spiritual astrologer and spiritual guide and teacher, as well as in my personal path as a mystic.
The inner earth is something we see glimpses of through human design, with the gates of our earth, and in astrology too we have the natal earth calculation which is essentially the sign opposite your natal sun; so for those interested in these systems, I will share with you how it shows up there also. And I’ll be sharing my own insights and teachings on how you may create your new earth, becoming the muse, art, painting and dance itself through which you may wish or desire to experience yourself at any point in time.
Within each of us, there is an inner earth; a beginning, a terra firma, connection with mother earth and the cycles of nature and its wisdom of rhythm, as well as our own natural rhythm and flow. It is the foundation within us, the soil upon and within which we were born, which then becomes the point of perspective through which we view our external environment, the people, the stars and constellations. This inner earth and soil, and how we tend to it, is what will essentially create the way we experience our life. It is also a starting point of creation and self exploration.
Everything else outside of us that we look at and experience then holds a mirror shifting our eyes within our own inner landscapes – so that we explore and discover another part of ourselves; it is an opportunity for a deepening. In esotericism we refer to this as within so without, as above so below.
Our musings are often desires for how we would like to experience ourselves in new ways, through which we may then deepen into self knowledge. For example, if I feel desire for dance, I may become a dancer, whether for one class or years, and yet it doesn’t define me as “dancer”, for it is only when I become not just a dancer but the dance itself that I actually deepen fully into it and then allow myself to experience myself as a dancer.
An inner alchemy happens in this way and we deepen into, essentially, a point of union, creation, or yoga. The dancer becomes the dance itself, the poet the poem, the one kissing or being kissed becomes the kiss itself. Love becomes loving, and only then is love alive and moving and being embodied as it should.
Through our various external experiences that we may come into, we enter into a process of co-creation and becoming artists. But it’s not about a fixed identity or job title to box ourselves in; these are all just ways for us to experience ourselves in new ways. It’s about the inner worlds and the art of the creation process itself, and what within us comes into more consciousness and awareness. Ultimately, all these experiences are only lighting up mirrors to then shift our eyes inwards and explore yet another land of ourselves, aspect of ourselves, making it more conscious, loving and alive.
In my celestial astrology readings that I offer to clients, for example, I take you on a visual travel interpreting your natal chart through the blend of both astronomy and astrology; this helps my clients actually see how the real skies looked like when they first opened their eyes and were to look up.
When you first opened your eyes on earth, if you looked up the skies, you’d see the planets in specific constellations as they are currently travelling along their paths – and this essentially becomes what you’ll see as your natal wheel. But what we need to remember is our perspective of this seeing i.e. we are viewing it from earth, not from the cosmos. In the same way, you may view your inner life through the mirrors shown back to you lighting your inner path to self exploration.
To understand anything in life, we need to understand its opposite. And without the external, it is harder to understand our internal cosmos and the universe that lives and creates from within us.
In both human design and astrology we see glipmses of the inner earth knowledge.
In human design, many people may sometimes wonder: how is this “earth” calculated in my chart?
The earth is what you will see in your body graph below your sun – you have both a conscious earth situated below your conscious sun, and an unconscious earth, situated below your unconscious sun.
The earth is essentially calculated as the opposite of your sun. So the conscious earth is roughly opposite your conscious sun, and the unconscious earth is roughly opposite your unconscious sun. In astrology, our inner earth is calculated the same way: it is the sign opposite your natal sun.
Your conscious earth connects to your incarnation cross giving you insights about your evolution, or what you are here to learn and evolve through. And your unconscious earth reflects your overall purpose, or what will deeply fulfill you in this life. As you can see, both of these are quite important for your life’s path. You can also interpret them by understanding that your earths relate to what may give you greater stabilty and comfort.
As I mentioned, in astrology, the inner earth is calculated as the opposite of your natal sun. To understand anything in life, we need to understand first its opposite. To understand the sign of Taurus, we need to understand Scorpio; to understand Aries, we need to understand Libra, and so on. To understand any sign, we need to understand its opposite – as every planet looks at its opposite and only this allows it deeper self-knowledge. Everything has meaning only because of something else making a relation to it. Nothing is absolute, especially in a natal chart and its expression of energy in our life.
This all essentially goes back to the ancient teachings of mysticism and esotericism. The first lesson of the priestesses in the ancient mystery schools was to know thyself and know the earth. And they’d spend many years doing that – for it is only through self-knowledge that we can rise in life.
The earth was particularly understood to be the reflection of our own relationship to self, and the way life worked also – as everything in nature holds all the secrets and wisdom of life and the universe, all of which apply to our own personal lives also.
In this way, the Tropical zodiac can also be seen as an essentially a delineation rooted within the relationship between the sun and the earth. It is a relationship astrology. If all the stars were to disappear from our skies, we could still touch the earth, the soil, look around at nature and its seasons and rhythms, and we may still know who we are within its core of creation.
Your earth is your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wildlands and landscapes of your inner self. There are cycles, rhythms, flows, temperatures and constellations within you. Your body is a wild sculpture of rainlife, of life within life within life. And along your inner wildlands you will find that some paths are explored, and some aren’t yet. The movements of planetary transits and the constellations with their unique voices and languages, as well as all people and situations in your life are essentially all allowing you to explore and understand your location or terra firma amidst it all, and then through that self-realization, to move beyond it and reach your soul’s purpose and dharma in life.
Like any earth, you too are comprised of many things. Various landscapes, temperatures, seasons, weather, continents and cities. Some are small towns with cobblestone streets and rich histories longing to be learned with a lightness of steps and a curious heart longing to explore the hidden gems; others towns are full of high rises with established beliefs and structures.
There are some parts that are deserts, where we might feel like nothing can grow and yet there we have the opportunity to see the beauty of stars at night; and others are jungles of richness and abundance. And we have caves, where we retreat like mystics; there, we need our lanterns. These lanterns are the flames of our awakened heart and eyes.
And we have forests where sometimes the branches can hide us from our eyes, but there we come into a deepening of trust and instinct. And there are mountains, where we put on our hiking boots to explore and climb, and the path may feel hard with obstacles, but a patience and kindness of rhythm, we learn perseverance, and on the other side, beauty surprises us, and on the top of our climb, we see horizons of wisdom in a way we haven’t seen them ever before.
And within our earth, just like in all other earths, there is a lot of water. You are full of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and icebergs. Some bodies of water are sweet, others of salt; some have many waves and strong currents; others still and quiet tucked away secretly in the forests. All are of different temperatures, yet all need tending to their needs. Lakes cannot stay still for too long for they will become swamps, so rainflife is needed. Ice, snow, vapour and rain – all different shapes, yet water is water, always.
There are also animals and wild life. Each have their own nutritive cycle and needs. Sometimes they are quiet, sometimes they are loud. All deserve intimate understanding and a way of speaking to them. These are our emotions.
We also have diverse continents of foreign cultures and foreign language that we’ll need to explore and understand. We have cities and tiny towns all with their own different cultures, belief systems, thoughts forms, ideas and perceptions. There are streets – some cemented, some cobblestones paved from many generations; and then there are other roads – off the path – where with courage of heart, we go to explore them on our own.
Of course, your inner earth isn’t just the opposite of your sun sign – this is only a beginning point, which you then shape, refine, and pave along the way. Each planet, each constellation, becomes a part of it also, as its seeds are then planted, nurtured and blossomed within you. Venus is the part of you that draws within your desires, she is the part of you that finds form within the formlessness, within the dissolution of boundaries – it is the way you love and weave love, and the wealth and abundance of the fruits and flowers you grow and shape. Mars is the part of you that courts that one he is seduced by: Venus. Mars moves towards that which he desires and is the energy of initiation, protection and drive.
Saturn is the spiritual teacher, nature itself and this earthly plane, teaching us about the powerful spiritual lessons of patience, perseverance, dedication, discipline and responsibility. He teaches of the wisdom gained in snow, and the cycles of the land, and how we shouldn’t push seeds into the frozen ground in winter, for flowers will not bloom, it is just not their time yet. He teaches us to mature and discern. And so on. All are in relationships to one another, because everything is a relationship; one cannot exist without the other, as the meaning is only often revealed through the interaction with the other.
In your human design, as I already mentioned above, the evolution which your conscious earth teaches you is important for your life’s path – and you will be exploring these various aspects of yourself and inner landscapes and wildlands through your experience with the external world. And your unconscious earth is where your purpose resides and moves through you and moves you forward also – it is what deeply fulfills you and even grounds you.
Our purpose isn’t a destination or a job title – it is a pathway and a how; it is the way in which we move through life along the circling staircases and how we move and what qualities we further develop and express through ourselves. But it is something also deeply rooted within your spiritual core. It is an essence expressing itself outward and through which you affect all others on your path also.
It’s not about the “what”, it’s about the “how” and the way. How are you nurturing the earth within you and the earth outside of you; how do you walk through life, what rhythm do you follow, what do you shape both consciously and unconsciously.
To understand both human design and astrology more deeply, you need to understand nature itself, because these are essentially systems reflecting greater cycles of time, as well as your inner life, body rhythm, phases and flow of nature. Our natal charts, for example, are spiritual studies of all that has already been consumed by time itself. The stars, constellations, planets, are all great indicators of time – of what has time has consumed, the burns and imprints from the sun and our karmic patterns, of what seed we are born into through our moon, which shows the lineage of our soul and the womb within which we are conceived.
Understanding our inner cycles and inner nature allows us to know what we need to feed, to nourish and to be fed, and what needs to be devoured completely. Our natal chart, just like our physical body, is a body of cycles within cycles within cycles; and human design too shows cycles, body rhythms and natural flow of energy. So you may begin with learning about nature’s cycles, rhythms and the elementals. Each of the signs is related to the elementals and to nature, and this shapes our path in life and our overall purpose.
Being cardinal water, which is the sign of Cancer, is about making pathways aligned to the awakened heart, love and nurturing, and aligning to the deeper mysteries and wisdom of the universe. It is about creating a space of belonging and inclusivity, just like rivers move in trust and intention, ultimately creating pathways for people, and unfreezing what has been frozen, moving people towards deeper love, acceptance, creativity and understanding.
Mutable fire, which is the sign of Sagittarius, created fire that transforms and awakens into new wisdom and insights, as it dissolves the boundaries between us. It has freedom, it needs freedom, because only the free mind and free heart can perceive the new and beyond, and then infuse more fire, intention and energy for creation and new movements. Mutable fire spreads wide beyond the borders of mind or physical borders or cultures.
You can understand your inner earth through these elementals and you can apply this to the aspects too. Conjunctions are marriages; you are marrying things into one, planting them in the same garden at the same time or temperature. So you need to know their unique needs also, to know how to tend to them during the seasons.
Squares are about change; and this is inner change that is needed within you; and until you yourself make that change, external things and situations will be in conflict to you, pushing you further and further into the uncomfortable until you decide to look within. Squares invite you to unfreezen or untangle something within you, and to then stabilize your earth as you learn anew; you are invited to grow and mature through deeper self reflection, and there will be restlessness sometimes in your inner rhythms, until you accept that you are walking the path of growth and inner change of perspectives. And so on.
To understand anything in life, we must understand its opposite and the observer itself; and when we view, witness and experience the external world, we then have the choice to shift our eyes inward and self-explore and grow on a soul level. Every polarity has a meeting place, where two energies can meet and kiss, with a patience and kindness of understanding.
No matter how seemingly different, there is always a meeting place and a common theme that may bind them or become the bridge for connection. And then we become our full body of rounded earth, and of cosmos. We become the full self.
In astrology, the path from our South Node to our North Node is the path of consciousness and our evolution. The South relates to a past, the North towards a future of our development and expansion of self. And while these two are always opposite of each other, they are part of one axis, a dance, and just two opposites within a similar experience; to show us various contrasts, so that we can come into a deeper union and deepening of an understanding.
This is why while they are always opposite in our natal chart, we will see them conjunct in some of our divisional charts, where we see our more subtle body and spiritual essences. They will naturally be conjunct in some of these divisional charts, because it shows where union has happened and that it is part of a union – a place where the past kisses the future in the present, which is the point of creation itself. A place where the dancer has become the dance itself, the poet the poem, and the one kissed and kissing is the kiss itself. This is the point of yoga, or union.
Our earth is important to understand, though it isn’t necessarily just known by a chart, whether human design or astrology. It is a deeper exploration of self – a deeper exploration of you throughout life, through the cycles and phases and seasons and landscapes. It is essentially your evolution towards spiritualization and towards individualization, so that you become a soverign body.
Remembering that we are co-creators is a beautiful gift we may gift ourselves. Of the self knowledge of our current inner world, we may then make the conscious choices to create our new worlds we would like to live in and experience ourselves through. Like a painting, we may create various aspects of this world – the climate, the landscapes, the atmosphere in which we could breathe, dance, reign and recreate ourselves further.
It’s a work of art, just like love is art, life is art. Every artist understands that the world they create may be a subjective one, a subjective creation, and that as such, there are choices to be made each day along the way and a selection of elements, nuances and temperatures. And yet every artist always also knows, that it is an art, a materialization, a kind of incarnation of his inner world.
Once we understand and illuminate our inner nature, we shed light on our path forward towards reaching our soul’s purpose in this life with an open awakened heart – and we can then also create a new earth, growing our beautiful flowers, nurturing our animals, and creating new paths with love and with caring.
